Kunsthistoriches Museum and the Schatzkammer

The Effects of Religion in Art

For an non-religious American, learning about the effects of religion on European History and culture has been extremely eye-opening. As we learned in class, religion doesn't necessarily affect our later generation because we do not fear the afterlife as much as peoples who lived in earlier periods. Art is a major part of this, as one can view in the Kunsthistoriches Museum, which features many works of both Protestant and Catholic Art. You can also view the attention to Catholic religion in the Schatzkammer, as the Hapsburg dynasty is mainly known for its fierce Catholicism. Here are some of my favorite representations of religious works (that I have pictures of).

Caravaggio's depiction of the biblical story of David and Goliath (using his own likeness to the newly headless Goliath) is one of my favorite works in the entire Kunshisthoriches Museum.

Beautiful cloak sewn with gold and silver thread with the Virgin Mary at the top center, and various saints depicted in each of the honey combs.
